Mountain Gorilla

The mountain gorilla is one of humanity’s closest living relatives, sharing more than ninety-eight percent of its DNA with humans. Found only in the mist-covered forests of central Africa, this remarkable primate lives in complex social groups led by dominant silverback males.

Mountain gorillas spend much of their day feeding on leaves, stems, and vegetation found within their high-altitude habitat. Their social bonds are among the strongest observed in the animal kingdom.

For decades, habitat loss, armed conflict, disease, and poaching threatened their survival. Conservation programs have helped increase population numbers, making the mountain gorilla one of the few endangered species showing significant recovery.

Despite this progress, the species remains vulnerable due to its restricted range and growing human pressures.
